Storage Cold rooms
Most community pharmacies & medical storage units use domestic fridges for the cold storage of medicines. This can create a number of problems. Domestic fridges are not designed to ensure tight temperature control in the required range. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, they often contain a freezer compartment that can be a potential cause of freezing if a medicine happens to get pushed up against the freezer box.
The seals on domestic fridges are less robust than they are on medicine fridges. They are likely to wear after a few years and further reduce the efficiency of the fridge. Opening the fridge can create pockets of air above the required temperature and the time for the temperature to stabilize again can be considerable.
With an increasing number of medicines requiring cold storage pharmacy fridges can become overstocked. Overstocking restricts the flow of air through the fridge and this can result in pockets of air that are higher or lower than the require temperature range.
